How It Works

STEP 1

Sign Up Online

Verify that you live in the City of Los Angeles and apply on our website.

STEP 2

Sit back & relax as we take care of permitting and planting

If you qualify and if there is space for a tree, we will send out an inspector and certified arborist to select the best location and tree species to plant in your parkway. We follow the City of Los Angeles’ Street Tree Planting guidelines. This process takes 3-6 months from submission of your applicaiton.

STEP 3

Water and care for your trees once they are planted

Once your tree is planted, it will need water for the first 3-5 years while its roots grow into the ground. A little effort now will pay off big in the future!

City Plants offers free street trees and we have an inspector who ultimately chooses the tree species depending on surrounding infrastructure and according to City of Los Angeles Tree Spacing Guidelines. Our main goal is to plant the right tree in the right place. While we welcome recommendations, we cannot guarantee that the species you prefer will be planted in your street or parkway. If you are a renter, we highly recommend notifying your landlord or property owner before submitting your application for a free street tree.

Thank you for requesting a street tree! By requesting trees through the City Plants Program, you are promising to water them so they can grow healthy and strong. You will receive instructions on how to water your trees properly by email and at your door. A good rule of thumb is to check it every week to see if the soil is dry, and if so, slowly add at least 10 gallons of water once a week.
